There are many different ways to whiten your teeth, some more legitimate than others. One method that seems to be experiencing a recent surge in popularity is charcoal toothpaste. However, this process of whitening likely causes more damage than it does good.

Charcoal toothpaste, also known as black toothpaste, contains powdered charcoal, which helps to whiten the enamel of teeth. Unfortunately, charcoal can be very abrasive. If used in excess or over an extended period of time, it has been shown to have an adverse effect on teeth. The American Dental Association has shown that charcoal can wear down the enamel, leaving the soft, yellow dentin exposed. Once the enamel is gone, it is impossible to replace and you’re left with sensitive teeth that are more yellow in color than white.

In general, there are two types of whitening methods. Those that contain peroxide for bleaching and whitening toothpastes. In most cases, it’s best to speak to your dentist to determine which is the most appropriate way to whiten your teeth. They may recommend an in-office procedure or whitening products you can purchase at your local drugstore. It’s also important to look for the ADA Seal of Approval on any products you plan to buy for your teeth. This ensures that the product is approved and safe for your teeth. Toothpastes containing charcoal are not approved by the ADA.

Most of the time, the best way to maintain a healthy, white smile is to go to your regular dental checkups, brush your teeth at least twice a day, and floss. During your appointment, you can always ask your dentist for recommendations of the safest and most effective, approved methods of teeth whitening.
