Bad breath or halitosis can happen for a number of reasons. In many cases, it is caused by eating certain foods, such as garlic, or even drinking too much coffee and not enough water. So, how can you tell if you have bad breath and what can you do about it?

Symptoms of a Bad Breath Problem:
Here are some of the most common indicators that you may be suffering from bad breath.
• dry mouth
• a sour taste in your mouth at all times
• sticky saliva that is hard to clear from your throat
• a thick, white coating on your tongue
• mucous
• post-nasal drip
• you’re overdue for a dental cleaning

What Else Causes Bad Breath:
In addition to what you eat and your level of hydration, there are several other causes of bad breath. Other causes include poor oral hygiene, poor brushing habits or incorrect or inadequate flossing. When food becomes stuck between your teeth it can eventually start to smell if not removed. The buildup of plaque may also lead to foul smelling breath.

Other causes include gum disease, dental decay, or dry mouth syndrome. Sinus infections can cause bad breath as well as radiation treatments for oral cancer. You may also experience bad breath if your saliva glands aren’t working properly.

How to Treat Bad Breath
Treatment may be as simple as drinking more water or brushing and flossing more regularly. You may even consider using a mouthwash. However, it’s important to remember that mouthwash won’t solve the underlying problem, it simply treats the symptoms.

It’s important to figure out why your breath smells. If your bad breath persists, you should speak to your doctor and dentist to rule out more serious illnesses or to get a proper diagnosis.
