Root Canals

The pulp or living part of the tooth, which lives underneath the outer layer of enamel can occasionally become infected or die. Root canal therapy is almost always necessary to save the tooth. Infected pulp often occurs when the tooth sustains a cavity, crack, or some other type of severe trauma and can result in extreme discomfort or pain. If you suspect you have a dying tooth, you should make an appointment to see us in Orem, Lindon, or Vineyard immediately.

What a Is Root Canal?

Inside each tooth there is pulp. The pulp contains the nerve and blood vessels of the tooth. Part of the pulp extends into the root area of the tooth or the “root canal.” If a tooth becomes infected or irritated, the pulp often suffers and becomes inflamed, resulting in pulpitis, a very painful condition. If the inflammation isn’t cured, the tooth may eventually die. The death of a tooth can lead to a dental abscess (infection in the jaw bone), which can lead to more extensive damage if not treated. If the tooth is too far gone, a dentist can remove the living tissue of the tooth to prevent infection and future damage.

Once the living tissue is removed, the dentist will thoroughly clean the tooth and then place a filling in the hollow space to keep the tooth infection-free. Once the root canal is finished, patients should experience a significant amount of relief.
