It doesn’t have to be a chore to get your kids to go to the dentist. If your children don’t like going to the dentist or feel scared every time they go, it may be time to find a new dentist. Do a little research before their next six month appointment to find a dentist that will make them feel comfortable and relaxed.
Before taking your child to their next appointment, pay a visit to the potential dentists you’ve researched. Notice if their office seems receptive to children. Speak to the receptionist and staff and ask any questions you may have. Are they helpful and friendly? If so, you’ve probably found a great place to bring your child.
Dentist Office
Start in the waiting room. Is the waiting room inviting to children? Or is it plain with nothing for children to do? A child-friendly dentist office needs to be colorful, with fun paintings on the wall. There should be books, toys, or maybe even a fish tank. The more distractions in the waiting room, the less time your children have to think about what’s coming.
Once the child’s name is called and they’re sitting in the chair, fun designs or pictures on the ceiling can help keep them entertained and not so focused on the clinking and drilling going on in their mouth. Some offices even have T.V.s mounted near the ceilings. Cartoons are another great distraction for children in the chair.
The Dentist
Pediatric dentists are those who are specially trained to work with children. A pediatric dentist office is geared towards children. The staff are always friendly and treat your child with respect. They try to make the experience as fun for children as possible. They may name certain tools such as Ms. Floss to keep the children at ease.
They want to make sure your child has a good time at the dentist. Typically, at the end of the appointment, children receive a treat or prize as a reward. This might include a new toothbrush, small toy, or sticker.
