Wisdom teeth are the most common teeth to need extraction because there usually isn’t enough room in the mouth for them and they can create problems. They usually erupt between the ages of 18 and 21 and we are ready to relieve you of them in our Orem, Lindon, or Vineyard offices.
Do My Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Removed?
The only way to know for certain is to visit your dentist. Through a thorough examination and x-rays your dentist can determine if it is necessary. In most cases wisdom teeth are removed due to pain, infection, gum disease, deep cavities, damage to adjacent teeth, cysts, tumors, improper alignment or the threat of one or all of these things.
Monitoring Wisdom Teeth
Our mouths change over time, especially during adolescents. Regular dental appointments are important so that your dentist can monitor your wisdom teeth and detect any problems before they become major issues. In some cases, there may be enough room for patients to keep their wisdom teeth and to properly clean them, but most of the time removal is the best course of action for the future health of the mouth.
General Dentist or Oral Surgeon
Canyon Gate Dental is well-equipped to successfully evaluate and treat most wisdom teeth cases. On rare occasions, we may refer patients to an oral surgeon. This is often the case if the wisdom teeth are impacted, coming in at weird angles, or if the root of a tooth is too close to the nerves or sinuses. Your safety is our priority and an oral surgeon will be able to offer more specialized care in these instances. Oral surgeons can provide you with a more complete sedation experience than at a general dental office, so if you are nervous about getting dental work done, an oral surgeon might be a good option. Once we evaluate your individual situation, we will be able to determine the best course of action for your wisdom teeth.
