Sometimes, despite brushing twice a day, flossing regularly, and maintaining a good oral health care regime, you may experience some pain or oral discomfort. If you start to notice discomfort or any change in your mouth, it’s important to contact your dentist. They can help determine the cause of your pain, give you an official diagnosis, and start you on the proper course of treatment.
After making an appointment to see your dentist, there are a few home remedies you can try to relieve the pain temporarily.
Bleeding Gums
Bleeding gums are often the result of something more serious such as gum disease or trauma. One way to reduce the bleeding while you wait to get treated is to use a wet tea bag. Prepare a cup of tea. Remove the tea bag and squeeze the excess water out. Press the damp tea bag against your gums. Hold the tea bag there for 20 minutes. Repeat as needed.
Loose Crown
If you notice your crown has become loose, you can temporarily fix it. Create a paste using cornstarch and vaseline. Use a small amount to situate the crown back on the tooth.
Lost Filling
A lost filling can certainly be painful. The best thing to do if you lose a filling is to rinse your mouth with warm salt water and get to your dentist as soon as possible.
Toothache
Toothaches can range from uncomfortable to excruciating. If you start to feel a toothache, rinse your mouth with warm water. If possible, use floss to remove any extra food or debris from around the tooth. Then, contact your dentist immediately to find a permanent solution.
You can also rinse your mouth with warm salt water and massage the area with clove oil. Clove oil will help numb the area, briefly reducing the pain until you can see your dentist. You can buy clove oil in any regular health food store. If you can’t see your dentist immediately, you may also consider putting sugar-free gum over the affected tooth to protect it against food and drink.
Remember, home remedies and over-the-counter medicines can temporarily reduce pain, but it’s imperative that you visit your dentist as soon as you can to find the cause of and proper treatment for your pain.
