  • Bacteria thrives on the food that you eat, they can easily convert sugars into acids that can erode your teeth
  • Instead of frequently eating sweets, you should consider maintaining a diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables

In order to care for your teeth, you will have to maintain the proper oral hygiene practices on a daily basis. But aside from that, you should also know that your diet can actually play a huge part when it comes to the condition of your oral health.

For example, people who frequently eat sugary sweets and refined carbohydrates have a higher risk for tooth decay especially if they do not clean their teeth after eating. With that said, what you eat on a regular basis, and how often you eat can directly affect the development of tooth decay.

You need to keep in mind that tooth decay is caused by bacteria, and if you will allow it to thrive in your mouth, they will form a plaque all over your teeth. Plaque is a sticky film that is quite hard to remove. Food particles and debris can stick to this film, and if you will not clean it right away, the bacteria will convert the food particles as well as sugars into acid.

The acid that they produce will then slowly dissolve your tooth enamel. Plaques can also form into calculus. These substances cannot be dislodged by simple tooth brushing and flossing. You will have to see your dentist to have it removed in the soonest time possible. Otherwise, it might end up causing serious oral problems.

When it comes to tooth decay, prevention is always better than cure. You need to keep in mind that for as long as you brush your teeth twice a day, and floss once a day, your risk for tooth decay decreases. Of course, you should also consider eating foods that are low in sugar so that the bacteria in your teeth will not be able to thrive easily.

You should also consider drinking lots of water after eating so you will wash away the food particles on your teeth. You can also cut back on eating snacks, and opt instead for salads or dishes made from fruits or vegetables. You should also see your dentist for a regular checkup as well as for routine cleaning.

Studies have shown that you can actually eat foods that will help decrease the effect of acids on your teeth. You can eat sugar-free gum, peanuts and cheese to help counteract the acids produced by the bacteria on your teeth. Always try to rinse your mouth after eating and do not forget to brush your teeth before bedtime, keep in mind that the food you consume can stay on your teeth for hours after you’ve finished your meal.
