New Patient
What to Expect on Your First Visit
At Canyon Gate Dental, we know that visiting a new dentist can come with a mix of curiosity and anxiety — especially if it’s been a while since your last appointment. That’s why we’ve designed your first visit to be both welcoming and thorough, ensuring you leave feeling confident about your oral health and the care you’ll receive.
Medical and Dental History Review
Your first appointment begins with a conversation. We’ll review your medical and dental history in detail to understand your current health, any medications you’re taking, and past dental procedures. This helps us tailor our care to your unique needs and ensures that your treatment is both safe and effective.
Comprehensive Oral Examination
Next, one of our skilled dentists will perform a full oral exam. This includes a close look at your teeth, gums, jaw alignment, and soft tissues. We check for signs of decay, gum disease, bite issues, oral cancer, and any other concerns that may need attention.
Digital X-rays (if needed)
Depending on your oral health status and the timing of your last dental x-rays, we may take high-resolution digital images. These allow us to see what’s happening beneath the surface — in your roots, bone structure, and areas not visible during a standard visual exam.
Custom Treatment Plan
After the exam and x-rays, we’ll walk you through a personalized treatment plan. Whether you’re here for routine maintenance, a cosmetic consultation, or restorative work, we’ll outline your options clearly — including timelines, procedures, and pricing — so you can make confident, informed choices.
Dedicated Time for Questions
We set aside time during every first visit to answer your questions. Whether you’re concerned about specific procedures, want to explore payment options, or just want to understand your dental health better, our team is here to help with honest, thoughtful guidance.

We Stand By Our Work
Retreatment Policy
At our offices in Orem, Lindon, and Vineyard, we use the best materials, equipment, and dental lab technicians, and we provide exemplary dental care. However, we also recognize that in rare cases, unforeseen problems can arise that may lead to poor results or outcomes in treatment. Therefore, we are happy to offer our patients a retreatment policy.
Crowns and Bridges
If you experience any problems with your crowns or bridges due to breakage or misfit, we will replace them at no additional cost up to three years after the initial treatment, unless specified at your appointment. This excludes problems resulting from decay.
White Fillings
For up to two years after the date of the initial filling, unless specified at your appointment, we will replace fillings that have sustained damage due to breakage or misfit, and excluding decay, at no additional cost. If there is extensive damage, a crown may be recommended.
Root Canals
Root canal therapy has a very high success rate. However, statistics show that almost 4 % of root canals fail. Due to the fact that the failure of a root canal is often caused by circumstances outside of our control, such as tooth anatomy, root fractures, low patient immune system, and breakage of endodontic files in the root, we do not offer a retreatment policy. If you suffer from a failed root canal, we will refer you to a specialist.
Conditions
To qualify for our retreatment policy, you must keep up with regular dental visits and follow your treatment plan. This includes attending cleanings, exams, and x-rays every six months (or as recommended by Dr. Payne, Dr. Young, or your hygienist) and making steady progress on your treatment. Good oral hygiene, a healthy diet, and avoiding habits like grinding your teeth help your dental work last longer. With proper care and regular checkups, we can catch problems early and keep your smile healthy for years to come.
After-Care Instructions
Supporting Your Healing and Long-Term Dental Health
Your treatment doesn’t end when you leave our office — proper care at home is just as important for a full recovery and lasting results. Below, you’ll find detailed instructions for caring for your mouth after common dental procedures. Following these guidelines will help reduce discomfort, prevent complications, and protect your investment in your oral health.
Fillings
After receiving a new filling, especially a silver (amalgam) one, avoid chewing hard or sticky foods on the treated side for at least 24 hours. If your bite feels uneven after the numbness wears off, or if you experience ongoing discomfort, contact our office for an adjustment.
Root Canal Therapy
It’s normal to feel some tenderness or mild discomfort for a few days following a root canal. Over-the-counter pain relievers usually help. Avoid chewing on the treated side until your permanent restoration is placed. Keeping up with good oral hygiene and any follow-up appointments is key to long-term success.
Extractions
Temporary Crowns
Treat temporary crowns with care — avoid sticky foods, floss gently, and try not to chew on that side. If your temporary crown comes off, call us to have it re-cemented. Keeping it in place is important to prevent shifting before your permanent crown is placed.
Permanent Crowns
Once your final crown is placed, resume normal brushing and flossing, taking special care around the gum line. Avoid chewing ice or very hard foods that could crack the crown. While crowns are durable, maintaining regular cleanings and exams will help ensure their longevity.
Your questions answered
Common questions
Do you take my insurance?
We work with many dental insurance plans. For insurances we accept, please refer to this list: Accepted Dental Insurances. If you don’t see your provider that doesn’t necessarily mean we can’t accept it. In a lot of cases, we are able to provide patients with care even when their insurance plan is not on the list, typically at no extra cost. Call our office to discuss your particular insurance situation and any specific insurance questions you may have.
What if I don’t have insurance?
We’ve got you covered! The Canyon Gate Dental Membership Plan is for patients who do not have dental insurance. It offers large discounts on almost all of our procedures, including cleanings, fillings, root canals, extractions, crowns, and bridges among others. Call our office to learn more about this plan.
Do you take Utah Medicaid?
We do no accept Utah Medicaid. We prefer to do our own charitable dentistry work. We believe we have a duty to care for the needy in our community. Eligible patients are selected based on referrals from friends, family members, or a church leader.
Do you work on Saturdays or evenings?
We understand that it can be challenging to take time off from work or school to visit the dentist, so we do our best to be flexible. Our offices are open at least one Saturday every month and we stay open until 7:00 pm every Wednesday. We also provide emergency treatment after hours when necessary. If you still find it impossible to make an appointment during these hours, please call us and we will discuss other alternatives.
Do you guarantee your dental work will last?
Our goal is 100% patient satisfaction. We use the best materials, equipment, and dental lab technicians. We do not rush our work and take every necessary step to ensure quality care. However, it is important to keep in mind that occasionally, as with anything, unforeseen problems may arise. That is why we offer a generous Retreatment Policy. If you are unhappy with your dental work or suspect a problem, we urge you to contact us immediately.
Do you do all the dental procedures in your office or do you refer to specialists?
Our team is highly trained and skilled in what they do. We provide comprehensive care and a wide variety of procedures in our office. However, if we feel that the treatment you require falls outside of our area of expertise, we will refer you to a trusted specialist. We collaborate with some of the best specialist offices in Utah County and will make sure you receive excellent care.
Do you see kids in your office?
Yes! We provide dentistry for the entire family, including children as young as two years old. However, some children may experience fear at the dentist and could be uncooperative. In these cases, since your child’s well being is of the utmost importance to us, we may recommend a pediatric dental office.
Do dentists in Utah “over diagnose” treatment? How are you different at Canyon Gate Dental?
Unfortunately, there are some dentists in Utah who can be overly aggressive in their diagnosis and treatment plans all to make a little extra money. Typically you can spot these dentists by their large advertising campaigns and crazy offers. We stand by the phrase: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. At our office we treat our patients like family or close friends. We never recommend a procedure or treatment that we wouldn’t recommend to our own mothers, children, or friends.
