How Long Does SureSmile Take? A Timeline for Orem Adults

How long does SureSmile take? For suitable, mild cases, Canyon Gate Dental’s SureSmile page lists 6 to 18 months of aligner wear. For a typical real-world case, the best independent data points closer to two years: the largest records-based aligner study we found, which tracked Invisalign patients, averaged 22.8 months, and about 94% of patients needed at least one refinement round. Add the weeks it takes to make your trays and the retainers that follow, and the honest answer is a range that your own 3D scan has to narrow down. Here is how the timeline breaks down for Orem adults.

Most Orem adults who ask this question are working backward from a date. Utah Valley University’s calendar, for example, lists commencement and convocations for May 5 to 7, 2027, and plenty of adults here are finishing degrees, changing careers or planning a big event.

How Long Does SureSmile Take From Consultation to Last Tray?

A SureSmile case runs in six stages. Only the order is firmly documented. The timing of the early stages varies by source, so ask the office for its own numbers.

StageWhat happensTiming
1. Consultation and scanPhotos, a 3D imaging evaluation, a talk about your goals and a personalized planSame visit, per Canyon Gate’s SureSmile page
2. Plan design and approvalThe digital plan is built and your dentist reviews itPublished figures range from a couple of days to about two weeks
3. Fabrication and pickupTrays are made and shipped; attachments are placed at a pickup visitPractices commonly quote a few weeks from the first appointment; ask the office
4. Active wearA new tray every 1 to 2 weeks, 20 to 22 hours a day, with check-insMonths; depends on your case
5. RefinementsA new scan and extra trays to finish what the first series did notCommon; adds time
6. RetentionRetainers hold the resultOpen-ended

The first tray is not worn the week of your consultation. Dentsply Sirona, the maker, describes the sequence of scan, plan, approval and delivery but does not publish a scan-to-tray lead time we could find, and the figures practices quote range from days to several weeks. Once trays start, Canyon Gate’s page lists a change every 1 to 2 weeks. The American Association of Orthodontists describes check-ins every 6 to 10 weeks for aligner patients in general, so you will usually receive several trays at a time, and your dentist sets the exact rhythm.

How Long Does SureSmile Take for Mild, Moderate and Complex Cases?

No independent study we found reports SureSmile aligner treatment time in months. One 2026 study of 14 SureSmile patients measured tooth-movement accuracy, not total duration. So the numbers below come from clear aligner research in general, mostly on Invisalign, and the SureSmile answer assumes it behaves like the rest of the category.

Mild cases sit at the short end. The AAO puts mild crowding or spacing at roughly 8 to 12 months of orthodontic treatment in general, and trials of mild, non-extraction cases report initial alignment in about 5 to 9 months depending on how often trays are changed. Those figures leave out refinements. In a 500-patient US cohort with an average age of 33.6, treatment averaged 22.8 months and about 64 aligners, which was 5.1 months longer than first estimated, and 17.2% of patients switched to braces to finish. Complex cases run longer: studies of cases treated with extractions report averages of 31 to 38 months, and the AAO describes complex bite problems as taking a couple of years.

Against braces, the independent evidence shows no reliable difference in treatment time for mild to moderate crowding, based on a 2024 systematic review rated low certainty. So read Canyon Gate’s 6 to 18 month range as what suitable, mild cases can look like, not a promise for every case. No published SureSmile study backs a specific number.

Why Refinements Add Time to SureSmile Treatment

Refinements are extra sets of trays ordered after a new scan, to finish movements the first series did not complete. They are routine. In a UK study of 324 adults treated without extractions, 99.4% needed a refinement phase, with a median of two refinement plans and roughly twice as many trays as first planned. Dentsply Sirona reports that 3 out of 4 completed SureSmile cases needed one or fewer refinements, but that is unpublished company data covering only completed cases, so it cannot be compared directly with independent studies of other brands.

Nobody has published how many months a refinement adds. One study found most of the improvement came at the first refinement. The research also shows which movements trip up aligners: rotating canines and premolars, moving front teeth up or down, and correcting deep bites. A 2026 model of 296 patients found each extra millimeter of overbite added about 41 days to treatment and a posterior crossbite added about 89 days, yet pretreatment measurements explained only about a third of the variation. Your scan can predict a lot of your timeline, not all of it.

What Speeds Up or Slows Down Your SureSmile Timeline

Wear time is the part you control. The FDA advises wearing aligners generally at least 20 hours a day and warns that treatment may not progress as intended otherwise. In one cohort of 2,644 adults, only about 36% were fully compliant, and in a 40-adult trial, patients who knew their wear was monitored wore trays 4.4 hours more per day. No study has measured the months lost per missed hour, so treat 20 to 22 hours as the target.

Tray-change speed is your dentist’s call. Faster schedules shorten the time per tray, but a systematic review of six studies found no consistent difference in efficacy and rated the evidence very low, and one extraction trial found no difference in total duration. SureSmile also offers an optional device called VPro, a vibration unit used about five minutes a day. Dentsply Sirona says it may reduce treatment time by up to 50%, citing three studies from 2018, one of them a preprint, and an independent review of vibration devices rated the evidence low certainty. Ask your dentist whether VPro suits your case.

How Long Does SureSmile Take When You Plan Around Orem Dates?

Here is a worked example, not a promise. UVU’s 2026-27 calendar ends fall classes on December 4 and the term on December 12, starts spring classes on January 11, 2027, and lists commencement and convocations for May 5 to 7, 2027. Say your first tray arrives around December 1, which means starting the process in the fall. That leaves about five months before commencement, which fits only a mild case finishing in one phase, with no room for a refinement. Twelve months lands in early December 2027, and a case that matches the 22.8-month average lands in late October 2028. Check UVU’s calendar for current dates first.

Before you set a deadline, ask any provider, including us:

  • Is my case mild enough for a single phase, or should I plan for refinements?
  • How long from my scan until my first tray?
  • How often will I come in, and how many trays will I get at each visit?
  • What happens to my timeline if a tray breaks or an attachment comes off?
  • How long will I wear retainers, and when do they start?

At Canyon Gate Dental in Orem, the SureSmile consultation includes a 3D imaging evaluation of your teeth and bite, a conversation about your goals, and a personalized treatment plan. Retainers: The Part of the Timeline That Does Not End

The treatment times above measure active aligner wear. Retention comes after. The AAO says a retainer is typically necessary for a lifetime, with wear that may taper from full-time to nights only at your dentist’s discretion, and it notes that skipping even a few days can let teeth shift. Dentsply Sirona’s description of SureSmile retainers as designed for up to 12 months of wear refers to durability, not to how long you should wear one.

How Long Does SureSmile Take? The Short Version

Plan on three clocks: a lead time of weeks before the first tray, an active phase that runs from about half a year in a mild case to about two years once refinements are counted, and retainers with no end date. If you have a firm deadline, ask for a case-specific estimate and build in a buffer of several months.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does SureSmile take for adults?

For suitable, mild cases, Canyon Gate Dental’s page lists 6 to 18 months. Independent studies of clear aligners overall, mostly Invisalign, put a typical real-world case nearer two years once refinements are counted. Your 3D scan and your dentist’s plan set your own estimate.

How long before I get my first SureSmile aligners?

Expect weeks, not days. Your scan becomes a digital plan that your dentist reviews, then the trays are made and shipped. Published lead times vary widely, so ask the office how long it takes for your case.

Is SureSmile faster than braces?

Independent evidence does not show a reliable difference in treatment time for mild to moderate crowding, based on a 2024 systematic review rated low certainty. Be cautious about any promise that aligners are faster.

Do refinements add time to SureSmile treatment?

Yes. Refinements are extra trays ordered after a new scan to finish the movements the first series did not complete. In one UK study of 324 adults, 99.4% needed a refinement phase. No study has published the months a refinement adds.

Can I finish SureSmile before graduation or another deadline?

Only a mild case that finishes in one phase has a realistic chance of a short timeline, and that leaves no margin for a refinement. Ask your dentist for a case-specific estimate and build in a buffer of several months.

Does the 6 to 18 months include retainers?

No. The published treatment times measure active aligner wear. Retainers come after, and the AAO says a retainer is typically necessary for a lifetime.

How often are SureSmile trays changed, and how often are appointments?

Canyon Gate’s SureSmile page lists a new tray every 1 to 2 weeks and 20 to 22 hours of wear a day. The AAO describes check-ins every 6 to 10 weeks for aligner patients in general, and your dentist sets your exact schedule.
