The area that became Mapleton was historically known as Union Bench and developed as an agricultural extension of neighboring Springville.

The Mapleton name
Named for the Maples Near Maple Canyon
Mapleton's name traces back to maple trees growing near the mouth of Maple Canyon. The Mapleton name eventually replaced the earlier Union Bench designation.
Maple Canyon and the eastern foothills remain a defining part of the community's setting today.
City history
An Independent Community Since 1901
Mapleton residents sought greater local control over roads, irrigation and other civic issues in the late nineteenth century.
Mapleton organized as its own town in 1901 and later became an incorporated city in 1948.

Mapleton lies on benchland between the Hobble Creek and Spanish Fork canyon areas, with the Wasatch Mountains forming a prominent backdrop to the east.
